Chapter 128: Playing You for a Fool

Upon hearing Murong Fu’s words, the corners of Fang Xu’s mouth lifted slightly.
Old Wu, Gu Bei, and the others standing nearby immediately understood what that meant. Fang Xu was about to set someone up again!
Along the journey, whenever Fang Xu wore that expression, someone was certain to suffer a miserable fate.
At the thought of this, Old Wu and the others could not help but silently mourn for Murong Fu.
Especially given the conflict between Murong Fu and Fang Xu, there was no chance Fang Xu would show him any mercy.
“Since Young Master Murong Fu has made the request, I naturally have no objection. However, I am still the dignified Court Commandant, one of the Nine Ministers. If I simply allow Young Master Murong Fu to search as he pleases, would that not damage my reputation?” Fang Xu murmured to himself.
“Then what do you want?” Murong Fu asked impatiently.
In his view, as long as he could search this pile of dolls, Fang Xu would be finished.
Once Fang Xu agreed to the investigation, everything else could be discussed.
“Since Young Master Murong Fu has asked, I shall speak frankly. One hundred taels per doll. What do you think, Young Master Murong Fu?” Fang Xu asked with a sly smile, his eyes fixed on Murong Fu.
“What? One hundred taels? Why don’t you just rob me directly?”
Murong Fu was so furious that he nearly died of rage.
How could Fang Xu even dare to name such a price? One hundred taels for a single doll? There were at least dozens of them. How much would that cost altogether?
Even Zhuge Jun felt a pang at the thought of it.
And Murong Fu was nowhere near as wealthy as Zhuge Jun. To make matters worse, Fang Xu was wearing an utterly shameless expression.
“That is indeed the price—one hundred taels. Of course, if Young Master Murong Fu is unwilling, I will not force you. Such matters should be based on mutual consent, should they not?” Fang Xu said with a smile, then cast a meaningful glance toward Old Wu by the entrance.
“If there is nothing else, everyone, please leave,” Old Wu said with a smile as he opened the inn’s doors.
The veins on Murong Fu’s forehead bulged. If he could, he would have cut Fang Xu down on the spot.
Unfortunately, he could not.
“Fang Xu! Do you understand what you are doing? You should know that among these dolls is my family’s heirloom luminous pearl!” Murong Fu demanded, staring at Fang Xu in frustration.

“I naturally understand. But why are you so certain that the heirloom luminous pearl is among these dolls?” Fang Xu asked, shrugging as he regarded Murong Fu with puzzlement.
“That is, of course…” Murong Fu managed to restrain himself just in time, nearly blurting out the truth.
“In any case, you do not need to know. It is among these dolls, that is all.”
Murong Fu inwardly sighed with relief. He had nearly fallen into Fang Xu’s trap.
“Since Young Master Murong Fu is so certain, why are you unwilling to pay one hundred taels? Could it be that one hundred taels is not worth as much as your heirloom luminous pearl?” Fang Xu murmured, feigning disbelief.
“You! You! You bastard!”
Murong Fu was thoroughly enraged. He raised a finger and pointed at Fang Xu.
“Young Master Murong Fu, watch yourself. I detest people pointing at me. If you do it again, do not blame me for failing to warn you,” Fang Xu said coldly.
Murong Fu seemed to sense the murderous aura emanating from Fang Xu. He immediately withdrew his finger, feeling so stifled that he could hardly bear it.
In the end, however, he chose to endure the humiliation. He already knew how insane Fang Xu could be.
Whenever he thought of Fang Xu’s madness, Murong Fu felt a faint ache in his shoulder blade.
That was a wound he would never be able to forget.
Though he felt deeply aggrieved, Murong Fu believed that once he recovered the heirloom luminous pearl, he would certainly make Fang Xu kneel before him and call him “Daddy.” Thus, he swallowed his anger for the moment.
“Well? Young Master Murong Fu, one hundred taels in exchange for the heirloom luminous pearl—that is an excellent bargain no matter how you look at it. Am I not right?” Fang Xu asked with a smile, entirely oblivious to how close Murong Fu was to losing control.
Up on the second floor, Zhuge Jun and Shangguan Lian, who had been watching the events below, were laughing so hard that they could barely contain themselves.
When Fang Xu demanded one hundred taels for each doll, they had watched Murong Fu’s expression change completely.
All his former arrogance had vanished.
Murong Fu had simply miscalculated one thing. If Fang Xu had been anyone else, Murong Fu’s identity might have intimidated him.
Unfortunately, Fang Xu did not fall for such tricks. At present, he was the one in control.
Even Murong Fu’s every move was being guided by Fang Xu. The sight nearly made Zhuge Jun laugh himself to death.

In Zhuge Jun’s eyes, had Murong Fu come here merely to make a fool of himself?
Perhaps Fang Xu truly was Murong Fu’s natural nemesis. Whenever Fang Xu was present, Murong Fu seemed to lose all sense.
Murong Fu had simply taken one wrong step, and now every step he took was wrong.
Just as Fang Xu had said, if Murong Fu truly wanted to recover the heirloom luminous pearl, he had no choice but to pay one hundred taels for the search.
Yet in Zhuge Jun’s view, if Murong Fu chose to pay, that meant he must be absolutely certain the pearl was here.
If that were the case, things would become rather troublesome.
However, after seeing Fang Xu’s current composure, Zhuge Jun felt that since Fang Xu had dared to say those things, he must have his own plans and confidence.
After all, Fang Xu had never done anything without certainty.
Now everything depended on whether Murong Fu was willing to suffer this loss.
In truth, Murong Fu was in an unbearable position. The treasure was his own, yet he still had to pay one hundred taels to search for it. Surely nothing could be more infuriating than that.
But if Murong Fu knew that the so-called heirloom luminous pearl had already been crushed into powder by Old Wu with one hand, who could say what his reaction would be?
When Fang Xu and Old Wu learned of it, neither of their expressions had looked particularly pleasant—much less Murong Fu’s when he found out.
Still, the thought of using this opportunity to deal with Fang Xu and make him suffer convinced Murong Fu that the one hundred taels would be well spent.
In the end, he gritted his teeth and took a heavy pouch of silver from one of the attendants behind him.
“Here are one hundred taels! Let’s see whether you can stomach it!” Murong Fu said as he threw the money pouch onto the floor, unable to stop grumbling under his breath.
