Chapter 138: I’m Telling You, Run!

“Sheng Chao, what the hell do you mean?! Lin Feng is actually a member of the Lin family. Why didn’t you tell me sooner?!”
At the Xu residence, Xu Tangde roared furiously into the phone.
Beside him, Xu Jie sat rigidly on the sofa, his face filled with disbelief, looking utterly dazed.
Xu Zhiqing stared at her father in shock, regret, self-reproach, and astonishment mingling across her features.
They had never imagined that Lin Feng, who had been at their side since childhood, was actually the long-lost eldest son of the Lin family, one of the Four Great Families.
When the overwhelming flood of news spread across the internet, the entire Xu family had been stunned.
Then Sheng Chao’s lofty voice came through the phone.
“Why should I have told you? Do you really think someone of your standing deserves to know?”
Xu Tangde was livid. “If you had made things clear earlier, we wouldn’t have forced him out with nothing! Now I can’t even pay my employees’ wages. Sheng Chao, are you seriously going to stand by and watch our whole family die?!”
His furious yet anxious voice reverberated through the living room.
Xu Zhiqing’s face turned deathly pale, and she began visibly trembling.
Beside her, Xu Jie stared blankly ahead. His lips moved for a long while, but he could not utter a single word.
Amid Xu Tangde’s fury, Sheng Chao let out a cold laugh.
“Yes.”
His voice rose, sharp and decisive. “You should be grateful that I was willing to answer your call under these circumstances. Do you really think the Xu family is some distinguished, eminent clan? You’re nothing more than discarded pawns.”
In an instant, all color drained from Xu Tangde’s face.
He had never imagined that what he thought was his final trump card for controlling Lin Feng was nothing more than a tool for others to sacrifice.
He and the Xu family had been nothing but pieces on someone else’s chessboard from beginning to end.
At that moment, Xu Tangde fell into utter despair.
The Xu family’s company was already more than a million yuan behind on its employees’ wages. With the penalties owed to several advertisers, its debts had climbed into the tens of millions. At the bank, every member of the Xu family had been blacklisted as a delinquent debtor.
For ordinary people, this might not have had much impact. But for a small company like theirs that was only beginning to establish itself, it amounted to a death sentence.
To make matters worse, Xu Nu’er had caused a scene on a television program a few days earlier and had become the laughingstock of the entire internet.
“Dad, I don’t want this. I don’t want to go back to how things used to be…”

“Dad, didn’t you say that as long as I was willing to come back, I could inherit the Xu family’s company and never have to suffer again?!”
“You lied to me! You can’t do this to me…”
Xu Jie had clearly lost control of himself. His dream of becoming a wealthy young master had shattered. Worse still, because he had been registered under the Xu family’s household, he had been dragged into their blacklist status. Photos of him looking ridiculous were circulating all over the internet as well.
Although he could not hear what was being said on the phone, Xu Tangde’s pallid expression told him that there was no turning the situation around.
At that moment, Xu Jie could no longer hold himself together.
Sobbing and shrieking hysterically, he raged at Xu Tangde, “You’re not my father! I don’t want to be the Xu family’s son anymore! What Xu family? I never should have come back! You’re all liars…”
“Xiaojie…”
Seeing that Xu Jie was on the verge of madness, Xu Zhiqing’s expression darkened as well.
Their family had indeed run into trouble, but these problems were only temporary. As long as they remained united, she would have been content even if they had to return to their former modest life.
Yet her own younger brother had uttered such outrageous words.
For a moment, Xu Zhiqing was overwhelmed by longing for Lin Feng.
If Xiaofeng were still here, he would never behave like this.
She still remembered the days when the company had been losing money. Even under immense pressure, Xiaofeng had comforted all of them. He had even taken work as a designated driver at night to make ends meet.
Compared with Lin Feng, Xu Zhiqing finally realized how worthless the younger brother she had always doted on—her own flesh and blood—really was.
“Dad, we…”
Xu Zhiqing was just about to suggest that they beg Lin Feng for help when Xu Tangde clenched his teeth and snarled into the phone:
“Sheng Chao, if you refuse to help me, I’ll tell Lin Feng about that matter. We can all go down together!”
His entire body was trembling with rage, yet his face was filled with fear and lingering dread.
At those words, Sheng Chao suddenly burst out laughing.
“Hahahahahaha!”
“Sheng Chao, what the hell are you laughing at?!”
“Xu Tangde, I’m laughing because you’re so stupid it’s pathetic!”
Sheng Chao wiped away a tear, his eyes instantly turning cold and grim.
“I’ll tell you the truth. If it weren’t for the years of friendship between us, I wouldn’t have answered your call at all!”
“Do you think the Lin family will let you off? Xu Tangde, my advice is that you take your wife and children and run. As far as I know, members of the Lin family are already on their way.”
Xu Tangde’s eyes widened in disbelief. “What did you say?!”
“I said, run!”
“Why are you still wasting time talking? The Lin family has dispatched a guard unit, and they’re heading straight for your house!”

“But if you’re not in a hurry, why don’t you guess whether tomorrow’s news will report that the Xu family home caught fire—or that an enemy wiped out the entire household? Hahahahaha!”
Beep—beep—beep—
The call ended.
With a clatter, Xu Tangde’s phone fell to the floor. His eyes widened in disbelief as terror spread through his entire body, leaving him trembling uncontrollably.
“Dad, what’s wrong?”
Xu Zhiqing approached shakily, bewildered, and gave her father a gentle shake.
The movement brought Xu Tangde back to his senses. Without bothering to explain, he sprang to his feet and rushed toward the cabinet. He stuffed three gold bars into his arms, then roared furiously at Xu Zhiqing:
“Hurry! Pack your things. We’re leaving Jing City!”
“Why, Dad? We…”
“Stop wasting time and move!” Xu Tangde bellowed, his face twisted with ferocity.
Xu Zhiqing was clearly frightened. She dared not ask anything further and hurriedly dragged the hysterical Xu Jie into the bedroom.
…
The basement level of the Lin family villa.
Lin Feng frowned as he stared at the person lying on the bed. Only the long, snow-white hair revealed that she was probably a woman.
Lin De raised a hand slightly. Behind him, Jason pushed him to the bedside. He placed a hand on the arm of the skeletal figure lying there, his eyes filled with indescribable emotion.
“Xiaofeng, this is your grandmother, Mu Huaiya.”
Lin Feng drew in a sharp breath.
Grandmother?
If he had not heard it with his own ears and seen it with his own eyes, he never would have believed that the person before him was the wife of the Lin family patriarch, head of the foremost among the Four Great Families.
Lin Feng knitted his brows and stepped closer.
“Why did she become like this?”
Instead of answering him directly, Lin De suddenly raised his head. His shadowed gaze settled on Lin Feng, and he asked with a probing undertone:
“Xiaofeng, do you remember the girl who saved you when you were little?”
