Asi tilted her head thoughtfully. Her tail behind her swished about in agitation. Her jet-black eyes darted back and forth. After a moment, Asi understood, and clenched her four little wolf paws. She turned, just about to bite Ryder. Unexpectedly, Ryder suddenly turned around. The little wolf blinked her eyes. Ryder’s blue eyes widened abruptly, as if they were a boundless ocean. Caught off guard, Asi was pushed away by Ryder. Her furry body rolled once across the ground before coming to a stop.

She whimpered softly, crying out in grievance. Asi remained where she was, burying her head in her soft body. As expected, he was angry. She whimpered again.

Seeing the little wolf curled up to one side, Ryder lowered his head. A sudden rush of dejection and inferiority welled up inside. “I—I’ll go now.” The basket contained only a scant handful of herbs. In truth, Ryder had been distracted the whole day. Slinging the basket over his back, he hurried away as though fleeing.

“Asi, see? He really doesn’t like you,” Tan said, sparing no effort to sow discord between them.

Asi bared her teeth at him in response, though her tiny milk teeth had yet to fully grow in. Tan was not the least bit afraid. He even floated over and circled around her. Asi immediately closed her mouth, her black eyes full of pitiful longing. Even her tail drooped listlessly to the ground. Asi wallowed in self-reproach for quite some time. Well, not that long—just a moment. Then she followed Ryder, heading toward the other end of the forest.

Ryder’s face remained flushed the entire way, so preoccupied he didn’t notice Asi trailing behind him. Only as they neared Redcap Town did he hear a few aggrieved whimpers from behind. Ryder turned around in alarm, and saw a little gray wolf standing not far away. Her gray fur danced lightly in the breeze. Her jet-black eyes gleamed, and she was exceptionally beautiful—even her coat shone with a radiant luster. For some reason, Ryder’s heart thumped erratically in his chest. How could it be beating so fast? Before he realized it, he had already rushed over to Asi’s side.

He deliberately put on a stern face, enunciating each word: “You, go back now. Up ahead is Redcap Town. It’s not safe for you.”

Seeing Ryder approach her of his own accord, Asi trotted over and rubbed against him, lifting her head slightly, those dark eyes fixed on him. That pitiful, glistening gaze made Ryder’s heart tremble. “Be good. Go back.” “Whimper…” Asi nuzzled him, then stuck out her tongue and licked his hand, her eyes still watching him, a hint of nervousness in her gaze. I tried to bite you just now—are you still angry with me?

(Sister Chaoyun, I think I’m drunk now...)

She blinked her eyes. The pink gauze of her dress floated upon the pool, mirroring the great blossoms of lotus blooming on its surface. Chaoyun walked over and, sure enough, saw Asi clutching a wine jug in her arms. Reaching out, she poked Asi’s forehead and laughed. “You’re the most obedient in the whole Celestial Palace. The banquet hasn’t even started yet—how did you sneak wine already?” Asi puffed out her cheeks in protest, her black eyes growing even more dewy. Hugging the wine tightly with one hand, she pointed to a tree nearby with the other, slurring, “I didn’t steal it! Xiaobai gave it to me!”

As soon as she finished, Chaoyun saw a long black snake slither out from Asi’s collar. “It’s clearly a black snake, yet you insist on calling it Xiaobai.”
