Chapter 57: After Class, Come Into My Arms (55)
Asi stood by the roadside, casting a glance at the people around her. She took a step forward, stopping right beside an older woman. Her demeanor was gentle and mild.
“Auntie, excuse me, do you know—”
Before Asi could finish, the woman immediately blurted, “Lu Yu went to the hospital!” Without another word, she hurried forward, helping a man who had fallen to the ground and supporting him into the house. Her already furrowed brows tightened further.
“Young lady, what business do you have with Lu Yu?” An elderly woman with silver hair approached Asi, carrying a bag of tangerines. Her face was deeply wrinkled, her back hunched so much that she barely reached half of Asi’s height.
“I’m Lu Yu’s classmate. He hasn’t come to class for several days, and he didn’t even ask for leave. Grandmother, do you know why he’s in the hospital?”
The old woman let out a sigh, set down her tangerines, and said, “It’s none other than his mother who beat him. I heard when the doctor went in, both Lu Yu and his mother were lying on the floor, blood everywhere—I don’t know whose it was!”
“That child is truly pitiful. Born to uncaring parents, he’s had a hard life growing up.” Asi thanked her and turned to leave for the hospital.
The little alley was quiet for only a moment before lively noises resumed. It was cramped, dark—
Suffocating.
—
“Hey? Lu Yu, you’re awake!” When Lu Yu opened his eyes, he saw Mo Tan standing in front of him.
“You’re finally awake. You slept for three days! You scared me to death—I thought you’d never wake up! If you just slept away like that, this life would’ve been wasted for nothing!”
Lu Yu sat up, rubbing his still-muddled head. “Uncle Mo.”
He had met Mo Tan by chance. Though Mo Tan often spoke in ways Lu Yu couldn’t understand, he was a decent person. Lu Yu was currently working under him and had earned much of Mo Tan’s appreciation.
“How long was I out?” Lu Yu glanced at the IV still attached to his hand, his brows knitting slightly.
“Three days! You’re something else, boy! Your head was nearly bashed in and you still pulled through! You have no idea how well I’ve taken care of you these days—inside and out, top to bottom, I handled everything! You’d better thank me properly!” He rattled on endlessly.
Still groggy from waking, Lu Yu chose to ignore most of it. “I’ll transfer you the money.”
Once Mo Tan finished, Lu Yu suddenly replied coldly.
“Do you take me for that kind of person? Huh? Besides, the money’s already deducted from your wages! Ha! Your last design was good—let me buy you dinner next time!” Lu Yu paid him no mind, tossing aside his blanket and pulling out the needle.
As he dressed, he asked, “Where is she?”
“Hey, hey! Why are you removing the needle? You—”
Lu Yu frowned, repeating, “Where is she?”
Mo Tan pouted, an expression wholly at odds with his rugged appearance. “That woman’s even tougher than you. Lost nearly all her blood and still survived—more resilient than you! But she’s still bedridden. You woke up before she did!”
Mo Tan blinked, as if Lu Yu’s early awakening was something to brag about. Lu Yu nodded, finished getting dressed, and walked straight out, ignoring Mo Tan’s calls. The burly man puffed his cheeks in frustration and grumbled, “Still the same deadpan look! Even after coming to the human world, you act like a blockhead. If not for me, you’d be left with nothing in this life but cold northwest wind!”
