Lu Yu took a piece of candy from Asi’s hand.
“One is enough.”
The candy was coated in pink sugar; it must be very sweet, just like her.
Lu Yu didn’t have a backpack, so Asi had to put the rest of the candies into her own bag.
She looked up and said softly, “If you ever want more candy, just come find me. I’ll keep them for you.”
“Alright.”
He gripped the candy tightly in his hand, as if…
As if he were holding the little girl herself.
Asi zipped up her backpack, making sure nothing was showing before she slowly headed home.
Lu Yu followed behind her.
They had left later than usual, so there were hardly any people on the road at this hour.
Their footsteps rang out clearly.
Sunlight fell over both of them, their shadows on the ground overlapping and then drifting apart.
Lu Yu frowned and took a large step.
When he saw that their shadows were pressed tightly together, as if Asi were leaning against him, he finally allowed a smile to curve his lips.
Before they reached the entrance to the neighborhood, Asi spotted a woman standing beneath a tree.
Her hair was a mass of chestnut waves, and her red dress hugged her figure, revealing seductive curves.
“Sister Chaoyun!”
Asi ran over and was swept into the woman’s embrace.

Looking up at her, Asi’s eyes sparkled.
“Sister Chaoyun, you’ve come to see me again.”
Her voice brimmed with undisguised delight.
Chaoyun reached out to tousle Asi’s soft hair, her dark eyes shifting to look behind Asi—
Lu Yu.
She gave a soft, dismissive laugh and lifted her chin slightly.
“Asi, didn’t you say that you were going to study hard now that you’re here? Why are you with a boy?”
Being with a boy wasn’t the problem—why did it have to be him?
That wretched little black snake.
Asi looked up in confusion. “Why can’t I be with a boy?”
“Asi, at your age, this is called puppy love. Good students shouldn’t get into that. Don’t you want to be a good student?”
Chaoyun coaxed her gently.
Asi was always so obedient; she had to take this chance to keep her away from Shangyuan!
“But why are there boys and girls in the class then? If being with Xiaobai counts as puppy love, then everyone’s in a relationship!”
Asi was thoroughly puzzled; Chaoyun’s explanation sounded odd to her.
“That’s not it. Has this boy ever done anything strange to you?”
“Something strange?” Asi blinked, not understanding what “strange” meant.
She found people in this world odd; they used things she didn’t understand, and even the lessons at school were filled with knowledge completely new to her.
“I mean…” Chaoyun frowned, then leaned in to whisper in Asi’s ear, “Has he ever kissed you on the mouth?”
Asi’s eyes widened, glistening with innocence.

Her fair little hand flew to her mouth and she shook her head quickly.
“Sister Chaoyun! He’s Xiaobai!”
How could Xiaobai possibly kiss her? That was just impossible.
“What about Xiaobai?” Chaoyun rolled her eyes.
Xiaobai…
“You know he’s Xiaobai?!”
Asi pressed her lips together and shot Chaoyun a sidelong glance.
That look was full of disdain.
“I’ve raised Xiaobai for tens of thousands of years; how could I not recognize him?”
Chaoyun brushed her forehead and shot a glare at Lu Yu, who was still standing in the distance.
A warning.
Stay away from my Asi.
Chaoyun, holding Asi’s hand, marched upstairs in a huff.
Lu Yu was left standing where he was, feeling a little lost.
That woman must be Asi’s sister, right?
But…
He’d been rejected.
