Asi looked at the remnants clinging to her fingers, pulled a handkerchief from her pocket, and wiped her fingers clean one by one. Only then did she turn her gaze toward the stunned crowd, and toward Tan, who was shivering on her shoulder.

"Ahhh! Asi, you’re so amazing! I’ll never speak ill of you again!" Tan circled around her, his tone filled with utter worship.

Asi felt a swell of pride. She lifted her chin slightly, her cheeks flushed a bright, healthy red. "Of course, I’m the best." She made no attempt to be modest, her eyes sparkling.

"What—what kind of monster are you!" Mrs. Griffin, watching the hoe vanish from her hands, felt her legs go weak and collapsed to the ground, staring at Asi in terror.

"I’m not a monster. I’m a wolf."

Asi frowned at Mrs. Griffin, her impression of the woman plummeting. She had been scolding her incessantly. It was so mean—truly, terribly mean. If it weren't for the fact that she was Ryder’s neighbor and had helped him in the past, Asi would have bitten her a few times already. What did she mean, "monster"? Was having great strength the mark of a monster? Hmph, she was a divine being.

"Where is Harris! Someone, go get Harris! Can't you see this evil wolf is going to eat us?" Mrs. Griffin shrieked toward the back of the crowd.

Asi complained to Tan, "Tan-Tan, this old woman is truly unreasonable. Do I look like I’m about to eat her?" But Mrs. Griffin didn't care; she just sat on the ground, wailing that Asi was going to devour her.

The noise gave Asi a headache. She shouted, "You’re too old! Your meat wouldn't taste good anyway! Though, I suppose you could serve as a chew toy." With that, she bared her teeth at Mrs. Griffin, her once-neat teeth instantly transforming into the sharp fangs characteristic of a wolf. The sight of that maw sent Mrs. Griffin into a fit of screaming.

Asi decided to quit while she was ahead. "Tan-Tan, let’s head back to the Black Forest. I’m not afraid of these commoners, but the knights are different. Their magic arrows are terrifying; they’re clearly designed specifically to deal with our wolf kin."

Asi had wanted to go inside and leave a note for Ryder, but she feared being discovered. Besides, time was short; if Harris really did arrive, she wouldn't be able to escape. She quickly shifted into her true form. A wolf’s true form is massive, and even though Asi was still a young wolf, she was already half the size of a grown human.

Seeing this transformation, the crowd erupted in chaos. "The wolf is going to eat us! Run for your lives!"

Mrs. Griffin glared at Asi—who had leaped onto the wall in her wolf form—with eyes full of terror and malice. "Don't be afraid, everyone! I have the anti-wolf firearm my son gave me!"

There were many knights in Red Hat Town, and since most people knew magic, they rarely had use for firearms. But for ordinary folk, it was common to keep a few at home. However, guns were of little use, as the wolf clan used them too. But... Asi didn't have one, and even if she did, she wouldn't know how to use it.
