After saying this, Harris led the knights away from Ryder's side.

"Harris, are we really not going to care about them? They're just children. Even if that girl knows magic, how old is she? If they don't go back, going into Dark Valley Swamp is suicide!"

"What kind of place is Dark Valley Swamp? It's dangerous enough to begin with, and there's a dragon there. All of us combined might not even be able to beat that dragon, let alone a girl and Ryder!"

"Even though Ryder has been helping injured wolves, his parents were knights of our Red Hat Town, and they gave their lives for us. Now that their only child, Ryder, is in danger, we can't just stand by and do nothing!"

Harris's brow was furrowed as well.

He said fiercely, "I really owe that little mute!"

"When you go in, secretly follow them. We're all from the same town—don't fail to come back!"

Harris angrily drank a big gulp of water.

His brows were knit tightly.

Ryder's parents had been extraordinarily good knights, and Harris had always looked up to them. After they died, Harris had been willing to look after Ryder. But ever since he had stumbled upon young Ryder saving an injured wolf in the Black Forest, Harris's feelings toward Ryder had become complicated.

Ash sat quietly beside Ryder, her dark eyes fixed on him.

The tail behind her started wagging, and the red cloak at her back swayed along with it. Ryder only gave her a casual glance and was startled.

He immediately reached out and pressed down on Ash's tail. "Ash, you can't. We'll be discovered."

There were knights all around. Although the red cloak could cover some of the wolf's scent, if Ash kept moving like this, it would be bad if someone found out. Ryder was very worried.

Ash looked at him, her eyes glistening. "But I can't help it either. What am I supposed to do when I see you and want to wag my tail?"

Ryder pressed his lips together and stammered for a while, unable to get a single word out, while his face turned bright red.

So she wagged her tail because she saw him... that meant she liked him, right?

Joy welled up in Ryder's heart, but his face was painfully shy.

He moved behind Ash and blocked her tail from being seen whenever it slipped out.

"Th-then, I'll block it for you."

"Alright," Ash smiled, her dimples shallow and adorable. "Thanks, Ryder."

"N-no need to thank me."

Watching the knights all enter the Dark Valley Swamp, Ash and Ryder followed them in.

The Dark Valley Swamp lay within a forest. But the dragon had just finished breathing fire, and the once-lush forest was now nothing but a stretch of scorched dead trees. The whole wood still gave off a charred smell.

"Th-this, how are we supposed to get in!" one knight said.

Before their eyes was nothing but fog mixed with smoke, and the air was filled with a choking, pungent odor.

Everything in sight was blurry, and even the air they breathed was foul.

Ash took Ryder's hand and walked slowly. "Breathing too much of this smoke is really bad for your health." She sniffed.

To Ryder's ears, that sentence sounded aggrieved.

Ryder took off the bundle from his back and rummaged through it for a long time until he found the herbs he had casually stuffed in when he left.
