“Zhang Qingqing, just because you treasure Xu Lecheng doesn’t mean everyone else will.”
Xiao Heshuo was pleased, the corners of his thin lips curving upward.
Zhang Qingqing glared at Yan Ziyue with the eyes of a vengeful ghost. “When I came to the educated-youth compound this morning, Lecheng told me everything. He said you’d been secretly looking for him, hoping to rekindle your relationship, and that you’d been bad-mouthing me to him!”
She had known it. Yan Ziyue was trying to steal Lecheng from her.
Yan Ziyue laughed as though she had just heard the funniest joke in the world, doubling over. “Oh, my goodness!”
“Zhang Qingqing, I truly admire your mind. You believe everything Xu Lecheng tells you?”
“Did he tell you that he ran away in secret?”
The moment those words left her mouth, Zhang Qingqing’s sobs stopped abruptly. She sat there in a daze, while even Yan’s father and Zhang Juhua were stunned.
“What do you mean?” Zhang Juhua demanded angrily. “Yan Ziyue, did you seduce—”
The rest of her words twisted into something else beneath Xiao Heshuo’s icy, bone-chilling gaze.
“Did you do something again?”
Yan Ziyue gave a contemptuous snort. “Why would I need to do anything?”
“By now, everyone at the educated-youth compound and in the village knows that Xu Lecheng drugged Zhang Qingqing and another educated youth, put them in the same bed, and then secretly caught a ride away.”
“You’ve heard of educated youths sneaking back home, haven’t you?”
The three members of the Zhang family had heard of educated youths fleeing home in secret, but they had never imagined such a thing would happen to their own family.
“Impossible! That’s impossible!” Zhang Qingqing cried, her face full of disbelief. “Lecheng told me this morning that in a few days he would take me home to meet his parents.”
“By then, I would become a respectable city woman. I wouldn’t be a lowly village girl anymore!”
Across two lifetimes, this was the first time Yan Ziyue had learned the real reason Zhang Qingqing had willingly thrown herself at Xu Lecheng. So that was it—she wanted to become a respectable city woman.
Yan Ziyue had thought Zhang Qingqing had done all those things to harm her, and for the money Xu Lecheng possessed.
“Zhang Qingqing, you used to be a fairly clever woman. How did you become this stupid?”
She mocked her coldly. “You know perfectly well what kind of person Xu Lecheng is, and after everything you’ve become, you still think he’ll really take you home?”
Zhang Qingqing opened and closed her mouth, wanting to say something, but not a single word came out.
That was true. She had never believed Xu Lecheng would take her home.
But after listening that morning as he described life in the city and told her how kindly his parents would treat her, she had believed him.
She wanted so desperately to become a city woman!
What a proud and glorious thing it was to be a city woman.
“Yan Ziyue, do you dare swear that you didn’t do anything to harm Qingqing?” Zhang Juhua demanded darkly, staring fixedly at Yan Ziyue’s face.

It was that face—or rather, the face resembling it—that had caused her to be a mistress for more than a decade.
If not for Yan Ziyue’s mother, she would have married the father of her child long ago. She would never have spent so many years as a mistress.
Yan Ziyue looked down at her contemptuously. “Do you have any evidence that I harmed Zhang Qingqing?”
She curled her lip. “Don’t make it sound as though Zhang Qingqing is some princess whom everyone wants to hurt.”
“You know better than anyone what kind of family Zhang Qingqing comes from.”
Zhang Juhua’s heart tightened, and her gaze shifted.
Could this little wretch Yan Ziyue know that Qingqing’s father was unknown?
If that were true, she could not allow Yan Ziyue to remain alive!
She could not let the truth about Qingqing’s unknown father come to light.
“Your child’s father, you must stand up for Qingqing!”
She threw herself over Zhang Qingqing and wailed miserably. “I know Yan Ziyue dislikes Qingqing and me, but I never imagined she would say something like that.”
“Is Yan Ziyue wrong?” Xiao Heshuo spoke first, his voice icy. “Or do you think you can continue using Yan Zhuangshi to scheme against Yan Ziyue?”
As soon as he said this, Yan Zhuangshi nearly ground his teeth to pieces, yet he did not dare say a word.
Zhang Juhua’s crying faltered, then gradually grew softer.
“You’re all here? Excellent.”
At that moment, Village Chief Luo approached, smoking a long-stemmed pipe.
He took two documents from his pocket and handed them to Yan Ziyue with a smile. “Ziyue, I’ve taken care of the formalities for severing your family ties.”
“With these two documents, you can go to the Public Security Bureau and transfer your household registration out of the Yan family.”
“From now on, you and the Yan family will have nothing to do with each other.”
Yan Ziyue accepted the documents delightedly and thanked him again and again. “Thank you so much, Village Chief!”
Village Chief Luo waved away her gratitude. “You should thank yourself—for finding the resolve to break away from the Yan family.”
In his opinion, Yan Zhuangshi was simply a fool. He had a good daughter and refused to cherish her, choosing instead to protect Zhang Juhua and her daughter while making things difficult for his own child at every turn.
Yan Zhuangshi would have plenty to suffer in the future.
Yan Ziyue carefully put away the two documents, her smile blooming like a flower. “To be honest, I should thank Xu Lecheng and Zhang Qingqing.”
“If those two hadn’t egged me on to use a hanging stunt to frighten my husband, I wouldn’t have nearly died—and I wouldn’t have come to my senses afterward. None of this would have happened.”
Village Chief Luo nodded. “Put that way, you really should thank Zhang Qingqing and Xu Lecheng.”

“Those two gave you a powerful dose of medicine and finally brought you to your senses.”
From the corner of her eye, Yan Ziyue noticed the vacant expressions on Zhang Qingqing and Zhang Juhua’s faces, and the smile at her lips deepened.
“Village Chief, did Xu Lecheng really run away in secret?”
She had deliberately intended to wound Zhang Qingqing and the Yan couple.
Village Chief Luo’s face filled with disgust. “I’ve confirmed it. Xu Lecheng really did run away.”
“Most likely, that animal had been planning it for quite some time. That’s why he acted so well these past two days and lulled us into lowering our guard.”
Before Yan Ziyue could say anything, Zhang Qingqing’s furious roar rang out.
“Xu Lecheng, you lied to me!”
Of everyone present, only Zhang Juhua felt any sympathy for Zhang Qingqing.
“You deserve to be deceived!” Village Chief Luo snorted. “You’ve done so many vicious things yourself. Now it’s your turn to suffer the consequences.”
He truly detested Zhang Qingqing and Zhang Juhua. Ever since the mother and daughter had arrived in Damu Village, they had caused trouble without end.
Zhang Qingqing in particular spent all day flirting with the men of the village, as though she could not survive without a man.
She dared to lash out at Yan Ziyue, but she did not dare provoke the village chief.
She understood perfectly well that if she truly angered him, life in the village would become unbearable.
At his words, she shut her mouth, her expression twisted with rage.
“Your child’s father…” Zhang Juhua called timidly toward Yan Zhuangshi.
Yan Zhuangshi did not dare say anything to the village chief either. He shot Zhang Juhua an angry glare, signaling her to be quiet.
Seeing this, Zhang Juhua felt a flicker of resentment toward him.
Before they married, the father of her child had promised that he would treat her well and protect her for the rest of their lives.
How much time had passed? Now he treated her like this and did not even care whether their daughter lived or died.
As expected, a man’s promises could never be trusted.
“Village Chief! Village Chief!”
Miao Lanlan came running over cheerfully. “Village Chief, those outsiders at the Yan family’s house smashed the place to pieces.”
“They’ve run away!”
