Chapter 13: Xiao Heshuo's Actions Led Yan Ziyue to Misunderstand
Yan Ziyue advised, “Sister Miao, without evidence, it’s hard to say anything.”
“You know Zhang Juhua’s character; she might turn around and bite you back.”
In her previous life, she had often been betrayed by Zhang Juhua and suffered many grievances and hardships because of her.
Miao Lanlan was well aware of this and felt quite disgusted. “No matter how careful Zhang Juhua is, she will leave traces.”
“I’m going to have someone inquire in Dalin Village right away. They’ll definitely find out how many men Zhang Juhua has been involved with.”
If you asked who she hated most in this village, it was Zhang Juhua!
It wasn’t that she despised Zhang Juhua for marrying with her child, but she detested the feigned fragile and innocent act, as if everyone was bullying her.
Yan Ziyue wanted exactly that effect, a smile spreading at the corner of her lips.
“Sister Miao, wait just a moment.”
She went to the kitchen, took out about a pound of wild boar meat, and pressed it into Miao Lanlan’s hand. “Sister Miao, this is my thank you.”
“If you hadn’t kindly told me, today the one humiliated by Hu Ergou would have been me.”
Xiao Heshou, who was tidying up the basket, heard this and a murderous intent darkened his deep black eyes.
“It’s not a big deal,” Miao Lanlan said, even if she wanted the meat, she wouldn’t be greedy.
This was a whole pound of wild boar meat, rarely eaten, only occasionally bought during festivals in small amounts mixed with cabbage as a treat.
Yan Ziyue insisted with a stern face, “Sister Miao, you quite literally saved my life.”
“You must accept this piece of meat.”
Unable to refuse, Miao Lanlan took the meat.
Her gaze toward Yan Ziyue softened. “Alright, I’ll accept it.”
“If anything happens to your family in the future, just come to me. I’ll help if I can.”
Yan Ziyue smiled.
“I won’t keep you longer, I have to help my husband tidy up — can’t let him work alone.”
Miao Lanlan teased her a little and left with the meat.
Yan Ziyue closed the courtyard gate and approached Xiao Heshou.
She sat on a low stool and helped tidy the basket’s contents.
While tidying, she heard Xiao Heshou’s question.
“What’s going on with Hu Ergou?”
Noticing the anger and dissatisfaction in his tone, Yan Ziyue shrank her neck. “Wasn’t Sister Miao in a hurry to find me yesterday?”
Xiao Heshou recalled the incident. “Yes, then?”
At that time, Miao Lanlan had pulled Yan Ziyue aside to talk privately; he naturally didn’t follow.
Leaning on his shoulder, Yan Ziyue whispered, “Sister Miao told me her husband overheard something at the Yan family’s place…”
Xiao Heshou’s mouth twitched; he often heard villagers say that Miao Lanlan and her husband liked eavesdropping.
He never imagined they were so obsessed that they went to the Yan family’s home to eavesdrop.
Yan Ziyue continued, “Sister Miao’s husband happened to overhear Zhang Juhua, Zhang Qingqing, and another plotting to lure Hu Ergou into a trap. Zhang Juhua even said she’d arrange everything.”
“After learning this, I asked Sister Miao’s youngest son to watch Hu Ergou.”
“After someone approached Hu Ergou, the youngest son would then tell him they had temporarily moved to a new place.”
Lowering her voice, she added, “I also had him find Zhang Qingqing to say someone wanted to meet her the next day to give money and gifts.”
She really hadn’t expected things to go so smoothly.
She thought it would be more complicated, but it went off without a hitch.
Xiao Heshou’s dark eyes flashed dangerously. “What you did, it’s too easy on Zhang Juhua and the others.”
Yan Ziyue shook her head firmly. “No!”
“It seems like I’m letting Zhang Juhua off easy, but… you heard what Sister Miao said — Zhang Juhua was beaten badly by her own precious daughter, and Xu Lecheng was threatened by Zhang Qingqing.”
A cold smile curled at her lips. “Next, those four will have plenty of chaos.”
What she wanted was for the scoundrel father’s family and Xu Lecheng to turn on each other, biting and tormenting one another.
Seeing her determined, Xiao Heshou didn’t say more but reminded her, “If something like this happens again, you must tell me, understand?”
Yan Ziyue cheerfully leaned toward him. “You’re worried about me.”
Xiao Heshou averted his gaze.
She pressed closer. “You’re worried about me!”
He looked away again.
Yan Ziyue moved closer. “You…”
He covered her mouth with his hand, eyes showing a mix of helplessness and indulgence. “I am worried about you.”
Hearing this, Yan Ziyue took the opportunity to kiss his palm.
The warmth of her lips on his hand was like sparks falling into hot oil, quickly igniting a blazing fire.
His gaze darkened, breath growing heavy.
He stared intensely at her, his Adam’s apple moving continuously.
Yan Ziyue pulled away his hand, wrapped her arms around his waist, and lay sideways in his embrace. “I knew it — you’re worried about me.”
“I promise, I’ll tell you everything from now on… What? Something’s stuck in my throat.”
She sat up, rubbing the spot that felt uncomfortable, only to see Xiao Heshou suddenly stand up.
“What’s wrong?” she asked curiously. “Are you feeling unwell?”
Xiao Heshou didn’t answer but quickly returned to his room.
He sat on the bench, supporting his head with one hand, eyes lowered to some hidden place within himself.
Just one kiss from Yan Ziyue had easily ignited the fire in his heart.
If not for his strong willpower, things might have already spiraled out of control.
“Husband, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?” Yan Ziyue stood at the door, anxiously knocking. “Open the door, I’m worried about you.”
Xiao Heshou rubbed his brow and exhaled deeply.
“I’m fine.”
His voice was hoarse and low, carrying a seductive undertone. “You go finish packing, I’ll come soon.”
To Yan Ziyue’s ears, this sounded like he was unwell. “You don’t sound right.”
“Open the door quickly, I’ll take you to the team’s clinic to have a look.”
“If you’re sick, you need to treat it early.”
Xiao Heshou smiled bitterly. This wasn’t really an illness… well, actually, it was a kind of “illness.”
Only Yan Ziyue could cure it.
“I’m not sick, just a bit tired. Resting will be fine.”
Yan Ziyue didn’t quite believe him and insisted he open the door. “Husband, open up, let me see you.”
“I’m sleeping.” Xiao Heshou lay on the table, feeling the fire in his heart grow stronger.
It would eventually “burn him to death.”
Yan Ziyue wanted to ask more but feared disturbing his sleep, so she returned to the low stool.
She continued sorting through the basket, all the while keeping an eye on Xiao Heshou’s room.
What was wrong with him?
He was fine just moments ago.
After thinking for a long time, she recalled that when she lay in his arms, he started acting strange.
Did he dislike her being like that?
