Luo Dainan swallowed it down.

True to her word, Lu Jiaor turned without a word and walked away, not sparing a glance at the pitiful, pale-faced figure before her.

This pill was one that would cause nightmares. As long as Luo Dainan lived, she would be plagued by terrifying dreams every night.

Killing someone was easy, but that would be too cheap for her. Living in torment, worse than death, was far more dreadful.

By now, it was the 1980s. She couldn’t kill Luo Dainan to avenge the original owner, but she wouldn’t let her off lightly either.

Thus, the Nightmare Pill in her hand was the perfect revenge.

Before coming here, Lu Jiaor had spent decades in the cultivation world. She was an outer disciple of the Dan Sect—not very powerful, but capable of refining simple pills. Most importantly, she had a close friend who was exceptionally skilled at pill-making.

This Nightmare Pill was concocted by her friend out of boredom. Good things were meant to be shared, so Lu Jiaor received three of them.

As soon as she woke up, Lu Jiaor immediately checked whether her small storage space was still intact.

Her storage space was modest, only ten square meters, which she had stumbled upon by chance in the Dan City market outside the Dan Sect. Having read countless novels, Lu Jiaor had recognized the opportunity and claimed it with a blood oath, winning this precious prize.

With this little space, Lu Jiaor felt a newfound sense of security and stored her entire fortune there, including all the pills she had acquired.

Before she had even reached the Lu family residence, she saw from afar someone holding a horse lantern at the gate.

“Jiaor, why have you been gone so long? Your mother was just about to come look for you.”

The figure at the gate was none other than the mother of the body she now inhabited. Su Yulan breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing her daughter return; she had been hesitating whether to send someone to find her.

“I just ran into Luo Dainan and had a brief chat with her,” Lu Jiaor said lightly as she linked her arm with Su Yulan and turned to enter the house.

Su Yulan had no reason to suspect anything and didn’t think much of it, assuming it was a chance encounter.

Inside the house, young Lu Zhuer was in the bathhouse drying herself, while the eldest brother, Lu Jiuzhou, was washing the hands and feet of the youngest brother, Lu Jiuqing. Their father was by the stove, heating water and stoking the fire.

With no electricity after dark and no entertainment, the family quickly finished their washing and went to bed.

Lu Jiaor thought she wouldn’t be able to sleep after such a long rest during the day, but she soon drifted off.

The next morning, except for the youngest brother Lu Jiuqing who was too young for school and herself who didn’t need to attend yet, eldest brother Lu Jiuzhou and little sister Lu Zhuer went off to school after breakfast.

After breakfast, Lu Jianping and Su Yulan went to the fields, leaving Lu Jiaor at home to rest and look after little brother Lu Jiuqing.

She had no objections, but unexpectedly, the couple returned shortly after leaving.

Not only had they come back, but they were followed by three tall, imposing men clad in green military uniforms.

“Comrades, please come inside and have a seat.”

“Jiaor, quickly pour them some water.”

Lu Jianping and Su Yulan hadn’t expected Gu Fengji and the others to arrive so soon and so early, and a wave of unease washed over them.

Could something have gone wrong?

After her parents left, Lu Jiaor sat by the stove warming herself with little brother Lu Jiuqing. Seeing the guests arrive, she quickly stood and fetched some bowls of hot water.

It was her.

Gu Fengji immediately recognized the young woman he had rescued the afternoon before—her delicate features, sallow complexion, and frail frame were typical of local girls.

Lu Jiaor sensed the discreet scrutiny but remained composed and unflustered, calmly serving the guests their hot water. She showed no curiosity and returned to sit with her little brother by the fire.
