Chapter 029: He’s Been Poisoned!
"Master Lu, the Old Master is here! And he looks rather displeased," Lu Feng said with a hint of concern.
Lu Feng was somewhat aware of the situation involving Lu Bofei and Lu Xifeng. Judging by the Old Master’s demeanor, he had clearly come for his son and daughter, and Lu Feng worried his master would be put in a difficult position.
However, the butler had guessed wrong this time. The Old Master’s dour expression was due to illness, and he had come specifically to see his granddaughter-in-law.
"What is there to panic about?" Lu Siye replied indifferently. With that, he took Chu Wanning’s hand and led her to the sofa in the living room to sit down.
Even if the Old Master were to cause a scene, or if the ancestors of the Lu family were to rise from their graves, he would not let those two off the hook. Lu Bofei had been bold enough to collude with illicit overseas forces, and Lu Xifeng was hardly any cleaner. Simply killing them would be too merciful—wouldn't it be better to let them rot in prison for the rest of their lives?
Rest assured, for the sake of family ties, he would certainly put in a "good word" for them, ensuring they were sent to the harshest prisons filled with the most vicious criminals, where they could sharpen their skills and gain experience for their next lives.
This was Chu Wanning’s first time meeting Lu Siye’s family. From the information she had gathered, she wasn't quite sure about the Old Master’s attitude toward his grandson. If he didn't care for him, he wouldn't have handed the entire Lu family business over to him; yet, if he did care, he wouldn't have watched him narrowly escape death so many times.
*Is the old man schizophrenic?* Chu Wanning decided she would find an opportunity to secretly check his pulse.
Lu Siqing was rubbing his round, full belly while looking forward with anticipation. Children were the best judges of character, and looking at the way the Old Master treated him, he must be a decent person.
"Why haven't you brought my granddaughter-in-law to the main residence?"
"Do you think I'm too old to matter? You didn't even tell me when you registered the marriage!"
"Are you afraid that an old man like me would cause trouble?"
"Lu Siye! Come out and face me!"
Before the figure even appeared, the Old Master’s resonant, commanding voice preceded him. Chu Wanning thought to herself that with lung capacity like that, the old man was definitely in good health.
Lu Siye seemed accustomed to this, sitting on the sofa and idly playing with Chu Wanning’s fingers.
The moment the Old Master stepped through the door and saw this scene, he couldn't believe his eyes. Was this really his grandson, the one who had always kept women at arm's length and showed no interest in the opposite sex? He had tried countless times to arrange dates for him as he reached marriageable age, but the boy had never once paid him any mind.
It was a headache!
"Hello, Grandfather! I am Chu Wanning!" Seeing him, Chu Wanning stood up immediately, greeting him politely with a touch of nervousness.
Lu Siye glanced at his now-empty hand, his gaze turning icy. The Old Master ignored him, currently busy scrutinizing his granddaughter-in-law.
"Yes, yes, very good! Quick, where are the gifts for my granddaughter-in-law?" the Old Master asked the butler from the Lu residence behind him.
"Right here, right here!" Lu Yun hurried to have four large chests carried forward and placed in the living room.
"You must be Ning, right? You are truly beautiful. One look and you can tell you’re a blessing to our family. Our Lu Siye is only good for his looks, after all. If he ever bullies you, just tell your grandfather. This old man’s cane still has a bit of strength left in it," the Old Master said with grandfatherly warmth, appearing to be a completely different person from the man who had just stormed in.
"Hello, Grandfather!" Lu Siqing chimed in.
*Sigh!* Sister-in-law was truly the center of everyone's attention now. Grandfather used to notice him first, but now that Sister-in-law was here, his status had dropped. But since it was her, he didn't mind.
"Oh, young Qing, you’ve grown taller! Not bad at all!"
Lu Siye finally rose slowly, taking Chu Wanning’s hand toward the chests. "Wanwan, go and see what Grandfather has prepared for you." Since the old man had plenty of assets, he might as well take some.
When it came to this, there was no way the Old Master would be outdone. He put on quite a show.
"Lu Yun, open them!"
One chest of gold bars, one of diamonds, one of jewelry, and one of red property deeds.
*Is—is this for real?*
*Is this worth billions?*
Had she, this "cheap" granddaughter-in-law, suddenly become a billionaire? Especially the chest of red deeds—it contained residential properties, commercial land, and even some undeveloped plots.
*Extravagant! Simply inhumane levels of wealth!*
Chu Wanning was ecstatic inside, but she remained calm on the surface; she couldn't reveal her love for money just yet. She played her part well.
Meanwhile, Lu Siye and Lu Siqing didn't even blink when they saw the contents of the chests.
*Fine!* So she was the only one dazzled by the money!
"Grandfather, no matter what methods you use, don't even think about saving those two," Lu Siye said, his tone firm.
"You brat, do you think your grandfather is someone who can't see reason? I came here today just to see my beautiful granddaughter-in-law. Don't spoil the mood," the Old Master huffed.
"Fine. Regardless, the evidence of their crimes has already been submitted. People will be coming to collect them in the next two days. You should handle this as soon as possible so it doesn't affect the stock price!"
It sounded like a reminder, but in reality, it was a jab.
A flash of disappointment and sorrow crossed the Old Master's eyes, though these emotions weren't directed at Lu Siye. The old man understood perfectly well; the worst thing in life was to bring trouble upon oneself through stubbornness. He was too old to manage it anymore, and since he had already given them one chance and they hadn't cherished it, not even a god could save them now. If he let his relationship with his most capable grandson turn sour because of those two unfilial children, he wouldn't know where to turn to cry. Besides, this boy had brought home a granddaughter-in-law that he was satisfied with at first sight.
"You handle it as you see fit!" The Old Master made his stance clear: he would no longer interfere.
Lu Siye had kept them in the dungeon for the past few days specifically waiting for the Old Master’s stance. It seemed things were going well, and he wasn't continuing to be delusional. He decided to withhold the other piece of news for now, lest the Old Master be driven to a fit of rage.
"My dear granddaughter-in-law, take a look, do you like them?" The Old Master had completely changed his tone toward Chu Wanning, causing the corner of Lu Siye’s mouth to twitch.
"Uncle Lu, move these to the Madam’s storage room."
"Yes!" Lu Feng responded quickly, with Lu Yun helping him.
The Old Master pouted; the brat was certainly protective of his wife.
"Grandfather, you don't know this, but when you talk to Sister-in-law, you look just like the Big Bad Wolf trying to lure a little girl!" Lu Siqing said, blinking his round eyes.
Chu Wanning couldn't help but curve her lips into a smile. "I love them, thank you, Grandfather! I have a gift for you as well."
Just then, the Old Master’s throat suddenly itched, and he began to cough violently.
"Lu Bei!"
"Yes! Calling the doctor immediately!"
Chu Wanning hurriedly reached into her small bag and took out her silver needles.
"Help Grandfather onto the sofa! I will perform acupuncture!"
Lu Siye did as told. After three needles, the Old Master’s breathing smoothed out significantly, and the coughing stopped.
"Grandfather, how long has this been happening?" Chu Wanning asked with concern.
She had just checked his pulse and discovered that he had been poisoned! The toxins were already spreading, and if not for his advanced age and declining health, this poison would have been difficult to detect. Her diagnosis wasn't just from the pulse; it was an educated deduction. To confirm the specific toxin, she would need to use her fourth master's ancestral technique. That would require the Old Master’s cooperation and trust.
By now, the Old Master’s condition had improved, and Lu Bei arrived with Qi Gui, who happened to be visiting today.
"Hello, Master," Qi Gui greeted Chu Wanning first.
The Old Master frowned. Why was Qi Gui calling his granddaughter-in-law "Master"?
