At the police station, in the interrogation room, Zhang Heng and Officer Li also participated in questioning the KTV staff. Through the interrogation, they learned that the KTV was part of a well-known chain. Thanks to the brand’s strong reputation and a card system that allowed customers to use the same card across multiple outlets, their business was exceptionally booming.

However, when asked about the person and events captured in the photo taken at 3 a.m., the KTV staff expressed complete confusion. According to all the employees, the KTV usually closed at 3:30 a.m. Since it was a chain and the card could be used at multiple locations, their business was consistently busy, with very few slow seasons. Recently, it was the peak season. But when asked about the man in the 3 a.m. photo, everyone was puzzled again.

Just as the police felt this lead was going nowhere, one of the KTV employees suggested they review the KTV’s surveillance footage. Indeed, checking the surveillance might uncover new clues.

At the same time, Officer Li received a new, more complex case and transferred full responsibility for the current case to Zhang Heng. Taking charge, Zhang Heng led his team back to the KTV to begin a fresh investigation.

This time, Zhang Heng started by reviewing all the surveillance footage from the KTV.

Deciding to explore other angles, Zhang Heng planned to use his knowledge from police academy to approach the case differently.

He proceeded to revisit the passageway where the dismembered body parts had been found. With the help of the mall’s property staff, he photographed and collected samples from every inch of the area around the passageway.

Back at the station, forensic experts sent a new report: the bag contained genuine human dismembered organs—arms and thighs—from three individuals: two men and one woman, estimated to be between 20 and 28 years old.

This forensic finding cast a darker shadow over the case.

Several pressing questions confronted Zhang Heng anew:

First, who were these three people?

Second, why were they brutally murdered and dismembered?

Third, why was there no trace of the mysterious man connected to the KTV inside the establishment?

Fourth, who was the killer, and why commit such a grisly act?

Faced with these questions, Zhang Heng found himself at a loss.
