Volume One, Chapter 20: What He Thinks, How Would I Know?
After speaking, Su Yuan and Huo Shixu went to the wound care room.
Song Nanyi struggled to control her emotions, taking two deep breaths.
“Lawyer Lu, I’ve thought it through. I’d still like you to handle my divorce case. I’ll have Lian Peng send you the materials we organized earlier. Besides my original claims, I want to add one more.”
Lu Weiqian looked at her. “Go ahead.”
“I want to reclaim all the gifts Huo Shixu gave Su Yuan during their marriage, including but not limited to transfers, jewelry, houses, cars, and so on.”
Song Nanyi was clear-headed about the divorce.
She wouldn’t let Su Yuan have an easy time.
“Alright,” Lu Weiqian agreed.
When Huo Shixu came out, only Song Nanyi was sitting outside.
Whether because she was waiting for him or because Lu Weiqian had just left, Huo Shixu’s expression finally softened a bit.
Song Nanyi looked up at him.
Su Yuan glanced at her, wanting to say something. “Sister Nanyi…”
“Yuan, you should go home first. Nanyi and I have something to discuss.”
Su Yuan wanted to make a point, but since Huo Shixu spoke, she obediently nodded. “Got it, Brother Shixu. I’ll go first then.”
The hospital corridor was quiet.
He bent down and sat beside her, deliberately placing his injured hand where she could see it. “What about him?”
“He left,” she said.
“Must be heartbroken, huh?” He turned to look at her.
Song Nanyi frowned.
In their previous life, although Huo Shixu was jealous, he always considered her feelings in his words and actions.
Now, not only had he learned to hit people, but he also mastered sarcasm and passive-aggressive remarks.
“Huo Shixu, do you find this amusing?” Song Nanyi pointed toward where Su Yuan had left. “You keep Su Yuan around every day. What did I say? Even if you don’t trust me, don’t you trust your childhood brother?”
“Him?” Huo Shixu chuckled lightly, leaning against the wall. “How would I know what he’s thinking?”
In the end, it all boiled down to suspicion.
She didn’t want to explain.
The more he misunderstood, the faster her divorce would proceed. In a way, that was a good thing.
After a long silence, Song Nanyi glanced at the time.
It was getting late.
Just as she was about to stand, an unfamiliar call came through.
“Hello?”
“Are you Song Xingyan’s sister? He’s been in a car accident. Hurry to Jiangcheng Hospital.” The voice on the other end was unfamiliar.
Song Nanyi’s heart clenched. Her eyes widened in shock. “What? How badly is he hurt? Is he in critical condition?”
“Don’t ask now, just come quickly.”
The call ended.
Trembling fingers shoved the phone into her bag as she hurried off.
Huo Shixu was about to chase after her.
His phone rang as well.
“Hello? Yuan?”
“Brother Shixu, I—I’ve been hit by someone. It hurts so much. Please come to Jiangcheng Hospital, quickly…” Su Yuan’s voice was weak.
...
Jiangcheng Hospital.
Upon arriving, Song Nanyi learned that Song Xingyan had been involved in a three-vehicle collision.
A dump truck that ran a yellow light, Su Yuan’s shared electric bike, and Song Xingyan’s bicycle.
As for the exact circumstances, Song Nanyi didn’t know.
But Song Xingyan was seriously injured, his entire leg covered in blood.
She gripped the doctor in fear, breaking down. “Did he hurt his leg? How’s his condition? Will they have to amputate? What other injuries does he have? Is he in danger? Doctor, please tell me…”
“He’s still under emergency care. The exact situation isn’t clear yet.”
Song Nanyi lost control.
Her little brother was still so young; his life had barely begun. She prayed fervently that nothing terrible would happen.
After several hours of emergency treatment, Song Xingyan finally clung to life.
Besides multiple fractures all over his body, the most critical injury was to his lumbar spine, leaving his lower body in a very poor state.
The doctor told Song Nanyi that Song Xingyan would need a delicate surgery if there was any hope of him standing again in the future.
Looking at her brother lying in bed, his body almost entirely wrapped in bandages, Song Nanyi’s heart shattered.
“How many times have I told you not to ride your bike to and from school? You never listen,” she said, holding his hand, tears of pain flowing endlessly. “When will you finally be obedient?”
Her brother remained unconscious.
Later, when the police arrived, Song Nanyi learned the details of the accident.
Su Yuan was also injured.
She had narrowly avoided being crushed under the dump truck’s wheels. Huo Shixu must have been heartbroken to stay by her side the entire time.
Song Nanyi stayed at the hospital for a full day and night without blinking.
During that time, Huo Shixu never came to see her.
When Song Xingyan regained consciousness, he was still very weak. Seeing Song Nanyi, he first apologized. “Sis, I got into trouble again. Please don’t tell Mom and Dad; they’ll worry.”
Song Nanyi couldn’t bear to scold him.
The dump truck had run the yellow light and hit Su Yuan, who was rushing through the red light at the last second on her shared electric bike. Su Yuan was thrown off and collided with Song Xingyan.
Unfortunately, after being knocked down, Song Xingyan fell into a roadside construction site, injuring his leg and waist.
He was the most innocent party in the accident.
The one who should have suffered the least ended up with the heaviest injuries.
“It’s done now. Don’t think too much. Focus on healing.”
Filled with guilt and regret, Song Xingyan said, “If I hadn’t taken that road that night, none of this would’ve happened. Sis, I won’t ride my bike to school anymore. I’ll stay at the dorm. Can you come pick me up on weekends?”
Song Nanyi ruffled his hair gently and forced a tender smile. “Alright. Don’t overthink it.”
Song Xingyan nodded. He tried to move but realized he had no feeling below his waist.
Panic surged.
“Sis, do I not have legs anymore?” He quickly threw off the blanket and saw his legs still there. He sighed in relief. “They’re still here, but why can’t I feel them? Am I crippled? Will I never be able to stand again? Tell me, sis, will I?”
His emotions overwhelmed him.
He couldn’t imagine a future without playing basketball, running half marathons, swimming, or any of the things he loved.
If that were the case, he might as well be dead.
“No, no,” Song Nanyi hugged him tightly, soothing him gently. “Your legs can be healed. The doctors said it’s just your lumbar spine that’s injured. You need a small surgery, and you can recover. So, you have to take good care of yourself now, so you can have the surgery as soon as possible.”
“Really, sis?” Tears in his eyes sparked hope anew. “You’re not lying?”
“Would I ever lie to you?” She wiped the sweat and tears from his face with a warm smile. “You’re old enough now. Stop crying like a baby, isn’t that embarrassing?”
The boy smiled sheepishly.
In another hospital room, Su Yuan remained unconscious, clutching Huo Shixu’s hand tightly, unwilling to let go.
Huo Shixu had his assistant Jiang Huai stay with her in the room.
He himself went to the doctor’s office to learn about Su Yuan’s condition.
“The patient injured her lumbar spine. If possible, we could invite Dr. Kevin, an expert from abroad, to perform the surgery. However…” The doctor glanced toward the more severely injured Song Xingyan, “...the little boy who came to the hospital with her actually requires a more delicate surgery. Otherwise…”
